Item Description...

Breakthrough Prayer explains the principles and lays out a vision that can revolutionize our lives, enabling us to receive all that God has for us.

Prayer is an essential part of the devoted Christian's life, Cymbala (Fresh Faith) reminds readers, and the Bible sets forth numerous examples of faithful men and women who prayed constantly. In this inspirational guidebook for committed Christians, the author, the pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, writes that he has seen the power and comfort of prayer not only in the Bible but in his own life, as well as in the lives of his church members, many of whom were personally affected by the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Cymbala assures that God wants to hear and answer people's prayers, and thus people should pray with "certainty" and with "confidence." He gives guidelines for making effective prayers, and suggests that only supplicants who abide by "God's spiritual laws" can expect to have their prayers answered. "An unforgiving spirit, bitterness, secret, sexual sins," he writes, "can stymie our praying." (This is the reason, he says, that he once refused to pray for a man in his Tabernacle-because he lived "in fornication" with his girlfriend.)

Cymbala focuses largely on how to use prayer to become filled with joy and to cast away worries or fears, and he spends much of the book explaining how a life of faithful prayer can result in deep, lasting inner peace. Spiced with lively anecdotes—the heroin addict who found God; the disaffected young man who became a soapbox preacher—and punctuated with pullout quotations, Cymbala's impassioned message should bring encouragement to the Christian faithful.

Inspired  Jun 5, 2006
Thank You Jim Cymbala for writing a book that is so powerful that it has inspired me to pray for the gift of salvation for lost loved ones and for what seem like hopeless causes.
Your book is filled with powerful scripture references and true stories of the amazing power of God to change lives when a person cries out to God. Reading your book as caused God's word on Prayer to become more alive and active in me. Reading this book has changed me and developed a deeper desire to remain in prayer. I recommend this book to every person who has questions in their heart regarding Gods power and prayer.

Not Jim's Best  May 17, 2006
I absolutely love Jim Cymbala and all that he has done for this world. I have read all of his books, and consider several of them to be my all time favorites.

However, if I am to write an honest review then I must admit that this is not his best book.
I would recommend instead that you look into his earler work: "Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire".
Both are about prayer and its influence in our life. Yet "FW,FF" is much more personal, filled with personal stories and humbling insight.

Praise the Lord God for His Work through Jim Cymbala!!  Jun 7, 2005
In a believer's life, one of THE most important things - in fact, we can never emphasize its importance too much - is a "prayer". Unfortunately, it is often misunderstood/misused or negelected by a number of modern day Christians. Cymbala's books on prayers are based on real testimonies and solid biblical doctrines, not too heavily influenced by any particular school of theology or denominational teachings. I find this book one of the "purest" and best teachings on prayers written by a modern day preacher (since C.H. Spurgeon). I personally was greatly helped and encouraged by this book (and other books by Cymbala)when I was going through a very tough time, while pleading with the Lord. The Lord has blessed me greatly with Jim Cymbala's books - i.e. the powerful testimonies of the ordinary people at Brooklyn Tabernacle in the presence of their Mighty God - and I give all thanks and praises to Jesus Christ my King! I pray you will read this book and be "inspired" and encouraged (by the Holy Spirit) as much as I have been. In my humble opinion, this is not just an excerpt or a repetition of his previous books. I'd rather call it a great "conclusion" of Cymbala's "Fresh..." series. This book is definitely a blessing to me - praise Jesus our Mighty King and Lord for answering my feeble pathetic prayers - all by His GRACE!

An eye opener! Wow!  May 15, 2004
To start out, this was my first work by Jim Cymbala. Now I want EVERYTHING he wrote! I really didn't know what to think when I first received this book to read for my own application. While the title may look simplistic, look beyond that. This dives straight into the heart of prayer and faith! Stories from people such as Nicky Cruz, a man who was raised as a devout Hindu and came to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. It also had the story of Lynette Mohammed who relied on the joy of the Lord through 9/11. Jim had a chapter on why we shouldn't fear. Awesome. The biblical examples in this book are just witnesses that can reach anyone! Examples of King David, Moses, Solomon, the apostle Paul and even one of my favorite verses out of the book of Habakkuk. This book taught me a lot about myself, and it gave new meaning to praying. It even taught me a little bit about what I need, patience! To wait on God sometimes. To rely on God's joy to be our strength, not ours!

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their walk with God, and so much more! This book is called Breakthrough Prayer. Read it and find out why.

He's coasting  Apr 2, 2004
This is more of the same from Cymbala. What was so stirring to read in Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire now seems like Greatest Hits, Vol. III or more. There's nothing bad or unscriptural here, but the only fresh material here is the stories of his church members' deliverance. A big disappointment.
